Burn” is a song by American R&B singer Usher, which he wrote with American songwriters Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox. The song was produced by Dupri and Cox for Usher’s fourth studio album, Confessions (2004). “Burn” is about breakup in a relationship, and the public referred to it as an allusion to Usher’s personal struggles. Originally planned as the album’s lead single, “Burn” was pushed back after favorable responses for the song “Yeah!” “Burn” was released as the second single from the album on March 21, 2004.

“Burn” topped various charts around the world, including the Billboard Hot 100 for eight non-consecutive weeks; it succeeded “Yeah!” at number one. Both singles gave Usher nineteen consecutive weeks at the top spot, longer than any solo artist of the Hot 100 era. “Burn” was certified platinum in Australia and United States, and gold in New Zealand. The song was well received by critics and garnered award nominations. In 2009 it was named the 21st most successful song of the 2000s, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. This song won the 2005 Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Song.

Usher submitted the album to his label Arista Records after he felt it was completed. After he and the company’s then-president Antonio “LA” Reid listened to the songs, they felt the album needed a first single and that they needed to create one or two more songs, which caused the album’s release to be postponed.

Usher went back to the studio and collaborated with Lil Jon, who said, “He needed a single. They had ‘Burn,’ ‘Burn’ was hot, but they needed that first powerful monster. That’s when I came in.”They worked on few more tracks, including “Red Light”, which was not included in the first release of the album, and “Yeah!”, which features Ludacris and Lil Jon.

Label personnel were undecided as to what to consider as the lead single. Reid was considering whether “Yeah!” would be released then, being as they also had “Burn”. Usher was doubtful if the former was the right choice, after he wanted an R&B record. Until “Yeah!” was leaked, “Burn” was chosen as the official first single from Confessions. “Yeah!”, which was intended as a promotional song and a teaser for Usher’s fans, was released to street DJs and mixtapes.

However, the favorable response to the song led to a change; “Yeah!” was the lead single and “Burn” was set as its follow-up.

“Sugar, Sugar” is a song written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim. It was originally recorded by the virtual band the Archies. This version reached number one in the US on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1969 and remained there for four weeks.

It was also number one on the UK Singles chart in that same year for eight weeks. The song became a hit again in 1970 when rhythm and blues and soul singer Wilson Pickett took it back onto the charts.

“Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies was produced by Jeff Barry, and the song was originally released on the album Everything’s Archie. The album is the product of a group of studio musicians managed by Don Kirshner. Ron Dante‘s lead vocals were accompanied by those of Toni Wine and Andy Kim.

Talking about how they created the mood of the song, Stannard said, “It was the madness in the room. There would be two or three things going on at once; we would have three or four mikes up and we would record everything then pick the bits we liked and play it back to them.”

The big finish in the movie Grease, where John Travolta breaks out some great dance moves in a party carnival setting, was an inspiration for this song. Stannard says they were talking about that scene when they started to write the song, and they built on that vibe with Matt Rowe adding chords to a beat Stannard had on an MPC drum machine.

Timberlake wrote this song with his producers, Timbaland and Nate “Danja” Hills. This team also worked on Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” and produced Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous,” which features a cameo by Timberlake in the video.

Musically, this song was ahead of its time, forged from elements of electronic dance music at a time when that was a fringe genre. The foundation is “four-on-the-floor” beat typically found in disco songs: the kick drum hits every beat in the bar. Danja Hills came up with the idea to use that beat on this track.

Superstition” is a song by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder. It was released on October 24, 1972, as the lead single from his fifteenth studio album, Talking Book (1972), by Tamla. The lyrics describes popular superstitions and their negative effects.

“Superstition” reached number one in the U.S. and number one on the soul singles chart. It was Wonder’s first number-one single since “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours“, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. It peaked at number eleven in the UK Singles Chart in February 1973. In November 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song number 74 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Jeff Beck was an admirer of Wonder’s music, and Wonder was informed of this prior to the Talking Book album sessions. Though at this point he was virtually playing all of the instruments on his songs by himself, Wonder preferred to let other guitarists play on his records, and he liked the idea of a collaboration with Beck. An agreement was quickly made for Beck to become involved in the sessions that became the Talking Book album, in return for Wonder writing him a song.

Between the album sessions, Beck came up with the opening drum beat. Wonder told Beck to keep playing while he improvised over the top of it.

He improvised most of the song, including the riff, on the spot. Beck and Wonder created a rough demo for the song that day.

After finishing the song, Wonder decided that he would allow Beck to record “Superstition” as part of their agreement. Originally, the plan was for Beck to release his version of the song first, with his newly formed power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. However, due to the combination of the trio’s debut album getting delayed and Motown CEO Berry Gordy‘s prediction that “Superstition” would be a huge hit and greatly increase the sales of Talking Book, Wonder released the song as the Talking Book lead single months ahead of Beck’s version.

On Wonder’s recording, the song’s opening drum beat was performed by Wonder on the kit that Scott Mathews provided at the Record Plant in Hollywood. The funky clavinet riff played on a Hohner Clavinet model C, the Moog synthesizer bass, and the vocals were also performed by Wonder.
