“Summer Nights” is a popular song from the musical Grease. Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, its best-known version was recorded by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John for the big-screen adaptation of the musical, and released as a single that same year.

“Summer Nights” became a massive hit in both the United States and United Kingdom during the summer of 1978. Included on the movie’s soundtrack album, the song was one of several hit singles from the movie. Parts of the song were introduced to a new audience when it was re-released in the 1990s as part of a megamix of several songs from the movie version.

In the movie version of Grease, Travolta and Newton-John played the lead roles of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson.

The song’s genesis stems from a summertime love affair between Danny and Sandy, which had ended upon Sandy’s revelation that she was moving back to Australia with her family. However, Sandy soon learns that her family is staying in the United States and subsequently enrolls at Rydell High School, where Danny is also a student.

(In the original stage version, Sandy Dumbrowski, who like many other characters in the play is a Catholic of Polish descent, originally attends parochial school. Danny, on the other hand, lied to her and claimed to attend Lake Forest Academy, a prestigious real-life private school in Chicago. Sandy’s parents’ decision to pull her out of Catholic school and put her in public Rydell High exposes Danny’s ruse.)

However, it quickly becomes clear that there are unresolved feelings of love between Danny and Sandy

“Summer Nights” reached No. 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and spent two weeks at No. 3 on Cash Box Top 100. The song was an even bigger hit in the UK, spending seven weeks at No. 1. Combined with an earlier nine-week run with “You’re the One That I Want,” the Travolta-Newton-John duet team spent 16 weeks at No. 1 during 1978 in the UK.

In 2004 it finished at #70 in AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.

In 2010, Billboard ranked it No. 9 on their “Best Summer Songs of All Time” list

This song about a difficult breakup was written for the Eddie Murphy film Boomerang. Co-writer Babyface was going to sing it himself

but he, L.A. Reid and Daryl Simmons decided Boyz II Men would do a better job, so it was offered to them. They flew to Philadelphia to meet them and as the group had to be back on tour the next day, they laid down all the vocals in just three hours.

It won 1992 Grammy Awards for Best Rhythm & Blues Performance by a Group with Vocal, & Best Rhythm & Blues Song for the writers LA Reid, Babyface and Daryl Simmons.

This was re-released in 2007 in Britain to coincide with the re-release of Boyz II Men’s greatest hits collection Legacy, returning the song to the UK Top 50.

The reactivation of Legacy was a spoiler by their old label Motown to coincide with the release of their first album for new label Decca, Motown Hitsville USA.

The song opens with the crying of a just-born baby. That’s not the song’s subject, Aisha, but at the end of the song when Stevie says, “Come on, Aisha. Get out of the water, baby,” the splashing and protests (familiar to many parents at bathtime) are really her, recorded during a memorable moment between Stevie and his daughter.

Wonder had Aisha with Yolanda Simmons, whom he mentions near the end of the song: “Londi it could have not been done, without you who conceived the one.”

The song runs 6:34 with a long fadeout where Wonder interacts with his daughter. Wonder, who had control of such matter thanks to a comprehensive contract he signed with Motown, would let the song be edited down and released as a single in America, which kept it off the Hot 100 despite being one of his most popular songs. The song was released as a single in the UK, where it was cut down to 3:26.

“Uptown Girl” is a song written and performed by American musician Billy Joel.

It was released on September 29, 1983, on his ninth studio album An Innocent Man(1983).

The lyrics describe a working-class “downtown man” attempting to woo a wealthy “uptown girl.”

Although “Uptown Girl” was not as successful in the U.S. as previous single “Tell Her About It“, it was still a big hit. It peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and number one in the United Kingdom, staying at that position for five weeks as his only number one hit in the country; it was the second biggest selling single of 1983 in the United Kingdom behind only Culture Club‘s “Karma Chameleon“, which Joel had knocked off the number one position on November 1, 1983.

The song was the 19th biggest-selling single of the 1980s in the United Kingdom, selling 975,000 copies. It has sold over 1.06 million copies as of 2017.

“Way Back into Love” is a Pop song, written by Adam Schlesinger, from the 2007 film Music and Lyrics. There are two versions: a demo version sung by Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore and the final version sung by Hugh Grant and Haley Bennett. It was used as the love theme in the film, much of whose plot revolves around the writing and arranging of the song

“Family Affair” is a pumping dance-pop song that incorporates elements of hip hop and R&B. The music for the track was originally created in a jam session between Dre and musicians Mel-Man, Camara Kambon, Mike Elizondo and Scott Storch. Later, Blige heard the song that her brother Bruce Miller, Asiah the Continent and Luchi Lodge created the lyrics and melody to and decided on recording her vocals.

On the single cover, Dre is seen in the shadows, highlighting his role on the track.

The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks starting from November 3, 2001, ending a ten-week lockup of the top two positions on the chart by Alicia Keys‘ “Fallin’” and Jennifer Lopez‘s “I’m Real (Murder Remix)“, which combined have spent the previous eleven weeks atop the chart. It was Blige’s first Hot 100 number-one single.

In 2008, for Billboard magazine’s 50th Anniversary, “Family Affair” was listed as the 79th-biggest single on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs. while at the end of 2009 was named the 12th most successful song from 2000 to 2009, on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of the Decade. Rolling Stone ranked it number ninety-five on their list of 100 Best Songs of the 2000s decade. The song was also responsible for the brief comeback of a new form of hip hop soul, a genre that she pioneered in the 1990s.

“Family Affair” was written by Blige, her brother Bruce Miller, Camara Kambon, Mike Elizondo, and Dr. Dre. Production was helmed by the latter.

Dre created an initial version of the musical portion of “Family Affair” in studio on September 13, 2000, using a bass player and a keyboard player. His studio engineers entitled this version of the song “Fragile” for record-keeping purposes. Near the end of 2000, he sent Blige the instrumental track. Blige recorded vocals over the music based on lyrics penned by Miller, Kambon and Elizondo.

Several weeks later, on January 10, 2001, a near-final but non-lyrical portion of “Fragile” was transferred from digital to analog format and renamed “Family Affair.” In late May or early June 2001, at Dr. Dre’s suggestion, Blige added a bridge to the song, for she penned the lyrics on the own

This was featured in the movie The Woman In Red, starring Kelly LeBrock as the woman and Gene Wilder as the married man mesmerized by her. Stevie wrote most of the soundtrack for the movie; he got the gig after Dionne Warwick, who was the “song coordinator” on the film, suggested him to the producers.

Wonder wrote seven songs that were used in the movie, including one called “Woman In Red.” He sang lead on three of the tracks, including “I Just Called To Say I Love You.” The soundtrack was issued by Wonder’s label, Motown Records,” which pegged the song as a hit and released it as a single. Two more songs from the soundtrack were also released: an instrumental called “Love Light in Flight,” which made #17 US and #44 UK, and “Don’t Drive Drunk,” which reached #62 UK.

Wonder claimed that while he wrote the music for this song in 1976, he “modernized” it when he added lyrics for the soundtrack. Wonder is an extremely prolific composer and was constantly coming up with songs that he would sometimes revisit much later.

In his testimony, Wonder added that he had John Lennon in mind when he worked on the song. Said Wonder

: “I had the melody and the lyric that I had for the chorus, and I imagined in my mind when hearing the chords that The Beatles were singing with me. And that idea and feeling is what inspired me to use the vocoder, when I heard about the vocoder.

And I always imagined myself and The Beatles singing that. It was in 1980 I believe, or ’81 when John Lennon was killed, that I knew that the dream would never be fulfilled.”

This is one of the least political songs you’ll ever hear, but it gave Wonder a voice to help end apartheid in South Africa. When the song won the Academy Award, Wonder said in his speech, “I would like to accept this award in the name of Nelson Mandela.”

The next day, the South African government banned his music, as Mandela was an enemy of the state, imprisoned since 1962. This drew a lot of attention to Mandela and his fight against apartheid in that country; later in 1985, a collective of musicians called Artists United Against Apartheid released the song “Sun City,” taking a stand against entertainers who performed at the popular resort in South Africa.

Wonder, energized by the ban, spoke out in interviews and included the song “It’s Wrong (Apartheid)” on his next album, In Square Circle.

The movement culminated in the 1988 Free Nelson Mandela Concert at Wembley Stadium in London, where Sting, Peter Gabriel, Whitney Houston and a host of other stars performed on his behalf. Wonder opened his set with “I Just Called To Say I Love You.”
